1 Timothy 6:20-21 "Guard the Deposit"
What does it mean to truly guard something precious? In this message drawn from the closing verses of 1 Timothy 6, we are confronted with one of the most urgent responsibilities entrusted to every believer: protecting the gospel of grace. Paul's final words to Timothy were not a gentle farewell but a pair of commanding imperatives, guard the deposit and avoid distractions. The deposit in view is nothing less than the good news that God, in His sovereign grace, sent His Son to live perfectly, die as a substitute for sinners dead in their trespasses, and rise again as the only Savior. That gospel was planned in eternity by the Father, executed by the Son, and applied by the Holy Spirit, and it has been placed in our hands. Like a trustee with fiduciary responsibility over someone else's most valuable asset, we are called to handle it with the utmost care. The message challenges us to ask honestly whether we are treating the gospel with the seriousness it deserves, in our families, in our conversations, and in our gathered community of faith.
