Step 5: Serving – Utilizing our service for God's Glory
Serving within the church is one of the greatest ways we can glorify God, grow in sanctification, and contribute to the mission of making disciples. Jesus Himself said, “The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). When we serve, we reflect Christ’s humility, love, and sacrifice.
Service is not just a task—it is a calling. Every believer has been gifted by the Holy Spirit to build up the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:4-7). Whether it’s teaching, welcoming visitors, working behind the scenes, or leading worship, each role is essential to the church’s mission. When we serve, we exercise our God-given gifts and contribute to the spiritual growth of others.
Serving within the church is also a key aspect of sanctification. It teaches us humility, perseverance, and reliance on God. By putting the needs of others before our own, we grow in Christlikeness (Philippians 2:3-4). Service often stretches us, leading us out of our comfort zones and deeper into dependency on God’s strength and wisdom.
The relationship between serving and the church is profound. The church is not a building or an institution—it is a living body (1 Corinthians 12:27). Just as each part of the body has a function, each believer has a role to play. When we neglect serving, the body suffers. But when we step up, the church thrives, and we experience the joy of being used by God for His glory.
Serving also impacts our witness to the world. Jesus told His disciples that their love for one another would show the world they are His followers (John 13:35). Service is a tangible expression of that love. When we serve faithfully and joyfully, we shine the light of Christ in our community, drawing others to Him.
