Step 4: Discipleship – Growing in Christlikeness
Discipleship is the lifelong journey of growing in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:18). It is the process of being transformed into His image, as the Holy Spirit works in us to produce godly character, obedience, and fruitfulness. Jesus’ Great Commission calls us not only to make disciples but to teach them to obey all that He has commanded (Matthew 28:19–20). Discipleship is central to the Christian life, equipping us to live for God’s glory and serve His kingdom.
From a Reformed perspective, discipleship is rooted in God’s sovereignty and the sufficiency of Scripture. Sanctification—the ongoing work of God in our lives—is His divine work, yet we are called to pursue holiness with diligence. Philippians 2:12–13 reminds us, “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.” This partnership between God’s grace and our effort shapes every aspect of discipleship.
Discipleship involves both learning and living. As disciples of Christ, we are called to study His Word, where He reveals His will and equips us for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16–17). Regular Bible study, prayer, and fellowship with other believers are essential practices for spiritual growth. At the same time, discipleship calls us to live out our faith, obeying God’s commands and reflecting His love in our relationships and actions (John 13:34–35).
The church plays a vital role in discipleship. Through corporate worship, small groups, and one-on-one mentoring, we are encouraged and challenged to grow in Christlikeness. Discipleship is not an isolated endeavor but a communal one, as we “bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2). This mutual encouragement helps us persevere in faith, especially in times of trial and temptation.
