Catechism #2

Question: What rule has God given to direct us in how we may glorify and enjoy Him?

Answer: The Word of God, namely the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, is the only rule to direct us in how we may glorify and enjoy Him.

Scripture Support

  • 2 Timothy 3:15–17 – “...the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness…”

  • 1 John 1:3–4 – “...that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.”

Explanation

Know: The truth to be understood
God has not left us to guess how to glorify and enjoy Him—He has spoken. The Bible, consisting of both the Old and New Testaments, is God’s perfect and sufficient revelation. It is the only trustworthy guide for knowing who He is, what He desires, and how we are to live. Scripture doesn't merely inform us—it transforms us by revealing God's heart, His ways, and His plan of redemption through Christ.

Grow: How this truth should transform us
Understanding that God's Word is our sole authority leads us to treasure it deeply. We begin to approach it not as a book of rules, but as a means of relationship. It draws us nearer to the Lord, corrects our thinking, and fuels our joy. As we read, study, and meditate on Scripture, our affections are aligned with God’s will and our delight in Him grows richer.

Go: Our response to the truth
Because God’s Word is the only true rule for life, we are called to live under its authority. This means reading it regularly, obeying it faithfully, and sharing it boldly. In a world of opinions and confusion, we stand firm by building our lives on the unchanging truth of Scripture. If we want to glorify God and enjoy Him fully, we must follow the path He has clearly laid out in His Word.
